AUSTRALIAN RULES, RUGBY & SOCCER LIGHTING

Legacy Lighting delivers high-performance field lighting solutions for Australian Rules, rugby and soccer, designed for clubs, councils and sporting venues across Australia.

Our Australian-made systems provide uniform visibility, controlled spill and dependable long-term performance across large outdoor playing fields.

Purpose-Built for Australian Rules, Rugby & Soccer

Australian Rules, rugby and soccer all require strong, even coverage across large playing surfaces. Fast movement, long passing distances, high ball travel and wide field visibility mean lighting must perform with clarity and consistency.

Our LED systems are engineered to deliver:

  • Wide-beam performance designed for full-field coverage
  • High uniformity ratios for consistent visibility across wings and backline
  • Controlled glare for improved player safety
  • Minimal spill light for neighbouring areas
  • Tough, Australian-made construction for long-term durability

Meeting Australian Rugby Lighting Standards

Rugby requires strong horizontal illuminance and high uniformity to support fast movement, long passing distances and safe player contact. The table below outlines the Lighting Technical Parameters (LTPs) for rugby fields, including illuminance, uniformity, uniformity gradient, glare rating and colour rendering.

Level of Play Average Horizontal Maintained Illuminance (Eh) Minimum Horizontal Uniformity U1 (Ehmin / Eh) Minimum Horizontal Uniformity U2 (Ehmin / Ehmax) Maximum Uniformity Gradient per 5 m UG Max Glare Rating (GR)

Notes:

  • For competition play, 150 lx is preferred where practicable to meet contemporary spectator expectations.
  • A uniformity value of 0.40 is preferred where practicable for new installations.
  • Where two or more fields are adjacent with simultaneous operation, U₂ may be reduced to 0.30.
  • May be reduced to 0.40 for adjacent multi-field installations.
  • For Rugby, the limit for G may be increased by 5% at one point only (or 2 or 4 points if there is scheme symmetry), but these points must not be on either side of the try line.

Meeting Soccer Field Lighting Standards

When lighting a soccer field, it is important to ensure the installation meets Australian Standards not only for minimum average lux, but also for uniformity, glare and spill lighting.

High-quality LED lighting can make a significant difference to the overall playing experience and visual comfort. The Australian Standard for football lighting is AS2560.2.3, which identifies different lighting levels depending on the level of play.
